When I open a one of my files it opens two files of the same name but with a
different number on the end. E.G. the file name is "Past Players:1" and the
other file name is Past Player:2, the original name is Past Players without
the number.
At the moment I have downloaded the trial of 2007 where the problem has been
fixed, but at the end of the trial I don't want to pay for 2007 as I am a
pensioner and can't afford the upgrade.

You have somehow enable a New Window view.
In XL 2003 this if done with Window | New Window
In XL2007 it is done with New Window on the View tab of the Ribbon
This feature lets you, for example, look at two sheets of the same workbook
side by side.

Just close one of the views (say Past Players 2) without saving; then save
Pat Players (the 1 should have gone)

If you are happy with XL2003 stay with it. Xl2007 has some new features but
nothing you cannot live without I expect
best wishes

Those suffix numbers indicate that you have multiple windows of the same WB
open.

Do a
<Ctrl> < W >
to close the additional window, and make those numbers disappear.
Now, <Save> the WB.

If you go to,
<Window> <New Window>,
You'll create those duplicate copies of the WB again.

This comes in handy when you wish to see different locations, at the same
time, of the WB.

After you create a "New Window", you go to,
<Window> again, and click <Arrange>

And configure your display of multiple pages.
You can open many new windows to see multiple assorted displays of the WB.

You have the workbook opened in two windows. That is why you're seeing the 1
and the 2. Simply close one of the windows and save the file.
