Excel 2000 Program not launching

L

Ligaya

I have been using this Excel Version (Excel 2000 SP-1) for
a couple of years now. All of a sudden while opening a
file, Excel did not launch at all. I repaired,
reinstalled, uninstalled and reinstalled again Office 2000.
All the other Microsoft Office program (e.g. Access, Word,
Power Point are fine).

I am using Windows 98 OS.

Help.

THanks.

Hi Ken,

The error messages vary. One message is that there is an
error in Excel. At times, it just hungs there and when I
press alt/ctrl/del gives me the error that the system is
busy. When I press the enter key, the monitor is black. I
know that something is not right since normally the Excel
program launches quickly.

I'll check for more error messages.

Thanks.

Do a search for a file called *.xlb and then delete it. Now try launching
Excel.

Ken,

Thank you very much. I will never find that solution on my
own.

I deleted the file (about 570 KB). When I launched Excel
it asked for an addin and the new xlb file is only 8 kb.
For my curious mind, how did the xlb file got corrupted?

Again many thanks.

LOL - Glad you got sorted :)

The *.xlb is in fact the toolbar customisation file, but in XL2K seems to be
quite susceptible to corruption. It was a common problem for quite some
time. Just one of those annoying things. It isn't replaced with a
reinstall so that doesn't help, and people get extremely frustrated with it.
You obviously lose your customisations but people don't normally care at
this point.

Ken,

Again thanks. I had a feeling there was some corruption
someplace, just did not know where it was. I will just
customize as I go along.

Would some VB programming corrupt that file? I got a file
from a client which has some macros and password. After
launching the application, I started having this problem.
I am sure I do not have virus nor the file had virus.

Regards.

No idea what used to do it to be honest. Anything that changes your
toolbars would be suspect, but many thousands do that with no issues at all.
It's not virus related though. The issue seemed to disappear with XL2002.
