Excel 2000 file size ballooning

Paul Townsend

Hi all,

I'm have setup a shared workbook that is accessed by four
users. I have turned off track changes but yesterday I
noticed that the file sized ballooned from 7 meg up to 69
meg for no readily apparent reason (ie - no-one had done
62 megs worth of work) and today the file size has been
fluctuating between 74 and 134 meg.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance

I have had the same problem for a while now. I have 2 people sharing a
workbook over a local network. I also have a macro in the workbook to
organize the rows by date.
I have stopped my antivirus from doing a virus scan of .xls files everytime
I save.
I have track changes off.
It balloons everytime there is a save done. Over months of trying to fix the
problem, I think it is one of two things:
1. While saving over the network, something causes it to save incorrectly
and enlarges the file size(sometimes takes uo tp 10 minutes to save).
2. 2 people using the macro. Everytime one person uses the "Organize" macro,
it changes all 500-600 rows, which could be done a few times before
re-saving. If that person "Organizes" three times, then saves, the file size
might triple in size. And, if the second person does the same thing, there
might be an increase of 6 times the original file size.
I have been on this board for months with nobody with the same issues until
now.
When your file ballooned from 7 to 69 meg, that is a factor of about 10
times. Did something get done 10 times in the book?
Are you able to upload it to a web page for me to see if it is a similar
problem to mine?
I am using Excel 2003.
If you or anybody reading has any ideas, I would love to hear them.
I have been frustrated for months trying to fix the problem!

Also, I have tried the reset last rows, but that is not the problem.
In order for me to reduce the file back to normal size, all I have to do is
take the book off share, put it back on share, and it is back to the
original size.
And, I have my track changes off!!

Try Unsharing the workbook, making sure the last cell is correct and save. What
happens to the size of the file?
