Having used an older Amd Duron 800mhz pc running windows
Me for 3 years I thought it was about time for an upgrade -
so I got - Asus A7N8X deluxe motherboard - Amd Athlon
2700+ cpu - Nvidia Geforce 5600 vid card and 1 gig DDR 400
ram - 2 new 40 gig seagate barracuda hard drives - all of
which received great reviews and write ups in the pc
press, with XP and no compatability issues raised - so I
decided to upgrade to XP profesional, bought the upgrade,
wouldnt load! So I got the full OEM edition, guess what,
freezes at starting windows blue screen!

Paul,

Microsoft does not provide support for OEM products.
You bought an OEM copy of Windows XP. The OEM (the seller) is responsible
for providing support to you, this is one of the many reasons that the OEM
copies of Windows XP are lower cost then the retail products.

Because you purchased your support from the OEM that sold you the OS....
Don't understand? It's simple really...

When you buy a product you are paying for two things. a) the licence to use
it and b) support. When you buy the OEM version (or a computer with the OEM
version installed) you are choosing to buy the support element from the OEM
not Microsoft. In theory it should cost an OEM about the same as Microsoft
to provide the same level of support, so the retail and OEM versions should
cost the same to you. However OEM are free to reduce the amount of support
they provide and that allows them to reduce the cost of the OEM version to
you. If you want the version that comes with Microsoft support then buy the
retail version.

It's all perfectly reasonable. My main complaint about all this is that a)
it's not publicised enough and b) Some OEM are reluctant to sell computer
bundles with the Retail version (even if you offer the increased price).

Pair yr sys down to min, ie mb,cpu,hd,memory - leave out vid and any other
cards - then install
Having double checked all conections
