After doing a full format and reinstall of XP Pro all applications are slow
to open. I am running a P4 2.4 with 1 + gb ddr Ram. Can someone offer some
ideas as to what I can do or check or?

Will,

I was hoping for something a little more helpful. As I stated in my post I
did a complete fresh install and there wasn't enough online activity for
spy/adware and I did a virus scan just in case. I have a suspicion that my
processor/board might be retiring. If you have any more ideas please reply.
Thanks

As failing component such as CPU or Memory doesn't cause a 'slow down' it
causes a crash.

Having performed a 'clean installation' one must presume that you did a
format of the hard drive before starting the installation.

If not, then it is entirely possible that any virus files that had been
'quarantine' have been released from their prison. You should make sure that
you do a full scan of the hard drive in safe mode to have the best chance of
detection / removal.

If this doesn't help. then look at your startup files: you may have
additional processes or apps running that are unnecessary and waste resoruces.

Click START> RUN>
Type in MSCONFIG
Click OK
In the System Configuration Utility Window - click on the Startup tab
Uncheck any items that you do not need to load at boot up: do only one at a
time, then restart and see if you have made an improvement. Keep going until
any and all items that are unnecessary are unchecked.

It is unlikely that you've managed to attarct any Malware, but it may be
worth running Spybot Search and Destroy just for the assurance.

If nothing is improved, then you may have changed the BIOS for processor
speed or cache. Just make sure that Windows reports the correct CPU speed
for your Processor: if there are errors in BIOS you will see that your CPU
speed is shown as much slower.
