"After 10 years of active development and presence in the freeware market,
EVEREST Home Edition (the successor of AIDA32) is being discontinued on
December 1, 2005 however, all online content related to freeware products
are removed from our website already. Lavalys will continue to support this
product for all users until March 2006, we will not be actively developing
any new features or functionality going forward."

AIDA32 is still available free at a number of sources.

I never really liked the free EVEREST anyway. It would not provide
your Operating System licensing number, but their Professional Version
does. Predecessor AIDA did provide the licensing data, and a whole lot
more than the take-over freebie from EVEREST. I cannot say for sure,
but old AIDA may be just as robust as the professional EVEREST.

Idiots.....

I wouldn't be so hard on Fiery, the creator of AIDA32/Everest. I find
Everest very useful for finding specifications of a computer and in
turn finding drivers for those devices. I just switched out a hard
drive today with Windows 98 on it from one box to another with
different hardware. Everest was right there to help me.

Fiery always stated that once AIDA32 was stable enough it would go
commercial. It did and I'm very happy for him. I don't think there is
any deceit on his part and if nothing else, he's created a large base
of loyal users which will probably be delighted to purchase his
product.

The problem is that they dont understand that they could make more money out
of the free program (and of course HOW they could do it), than making it
shareware!
And THAT is why they are IDIOTS!

Aida was certainly more functional, and for a proggy that didn't install to
the registry, it was damn good IMHO
My only criticism was that it could have been pared down a bit to fit on a
floppy.
I'd love to see a smaller text only version...

Everest Home?

FWIW, the Everest licence is pretty restrictive on this point:

"[You may] transfer the Product to someone else only if you assign
all of your rights under this License, cease all use of the
Product, erase or destroy any copy (including the hard disk copy)
made in support of your use of the Product, and ensure that the
person to whom you wish to transfer the Product agrees to the terms
of this License"

ok... Lets take TV. All the channels you see (I am not talking about cable
networks) are free. All the shows are payed for, all the people, studio and
content is payed for by........ advertisment. Advertisment can only work
when you have many viewers. The more you have the more you can get for
advertisment.

Now think of everest... over the last year or so it has become an ENORMUSLY
well known product, and its user database was growing, becuase it was of
good quality AND free. It was well known because it was the best of its kind
and free.

So it would generate a traffic of thousands of people every day downloading
it.

Well it was up to them to find a way to transform those people into money.
Just when they were getting there, THEY BLEW IT!

But no.. they went and took away the free version.... and less and less
people will be using it. I estimate a 90% percent drop.

I am not saying that they should put adds directly inside the program. No...
but they COULD of found a way to do this.

This is the future of sofware and content in general, because media can be
pirated, and programs can be stolen and cracked... and you cant really stop
it. So give it for free and find another way to make the money.

Even Microsoft is thinking of doing this.

O believe that most mainstream software and HARDWARE will be free in the
future.

Free hardware has another twist to the whole thing.

I think they'll be happy if 10% of their currently unpaying users
decide to pay them and continue.

The most common way is to offer a crippled freeware version, and some
people will pay for the full version. But that's what they were doing
up to now, so it can't be that they haven't thought of it.

With their OS and Office products, or something else? Any links to
references?

Software, maybe, if the Great Linux Migration ever happens. But the
future is a long way away.

Yes OS and Office products as far as I know.

Here is a link towards this information.

"Microsoft eyes making desktop apps free"

have in mind that things will change considerably. Old models of sale and
distribution of software and media must change to keep in pace with the
advancements.

The future is not very far away. The advancements are happening
exponationaly.

I will be revamping my site that will follow this new era...

Thanks for the link. IMO they're a long way from making that their
plan, longer away from implementing it. But who knows?
