AIDA project closes

A

Andy Boze

From the AIDA home page at http://www.aida32.hu/
As of March 24, 2004 we have decided to discontinue the development
project that we all know as AIDA32. Development of AIDA32 has been
started years ago, and the project went first public in April 2001.
AIDA32 has become the de facto standard for both home and corporate
system diagnosis and network audit, winning several awards including
"Freeware Product of the Year" by Support Alert newsletter in
December 2002.

As Riley would have said, "What a revoltin' development this is!" Anyone
know why? No explanation that I can find on the Web site.

Maybe lack of time???

Or maybe getting ready to release a commercial version?????

Those who haven't already downloaded this excellent freeware program, should
do so now.

Andy.................

Argh. I have AIDA32 automated CSV files generated at logon and
imported into a sql database for realtime audits. All for
hundreds of computers state-wide. Everything was finally
perfected and working smooth.

Bad, sad, news. So very many things just got so very worse.

Aargh,
D.

But in the forum he gives some hints. Seems he's getting married and he
mentions a better job and therefore lack of time.

Use a script instead. Let the script directly insert the data into the
database, perhaps? Win2k/XP/2003 have excellent scripting abilities.

George,
I agree, but which version? That is assuming it's for a stand alone
personal computer. The version differences are here (scroll down to
the table):

http://www.aida32.hu/aida-features.php?bit=32

If the Enterprise Edition doesn't detect a network, does that cause
any problem? Also, is the "Remote control through TCP/IP network"
feature any kind of security problem?

Otherwise, looks like eventually it's back to Belarc:

Belarc is a sad third cousin to Aida32 ... But someday I suppose it might catch
up now that Tamos is moving on to other things.

Well, I kinda agree. But it does provide a lot of information and it's
nicely organized.

Belarc is ok for a quick snoop and I confess to having it and occasionally using
it. I think Aida32 is more comprehensive etc. Anyway, moot points perhaps since
Belarc remains; Aida32 is toast. :-(

Not being that familiar with the software in question, but will what you
have now suddenly stop working or something? Doesn't this just mean no
further development? If it's truly freeware it should continue to function
regardless of what the author does or doesn't do in the future.

AIDA32 gives information about hardware on a computer. But it can only
display information about this hardware if it is stored in a database.
Since new hardware is manufactured daily, the database info should also be
updated daily. If this doesn't happen, more and more 'unknown'hardware is
released, while hardware known to ADIA32 will end its lifecylcle in a few
years

The author claims he cannot make the program or sourcecode aviable to the
public because of some licence Agreement he has. Yet others claim it's
becomming commercial/shareware.

We'll see.
But I tend to agree dsmcd it is sad the program will become useless

Lavalys Everest

appears to be *identical* to AIDA32

Interesting.

Also interesting is that there is a FREE Everest Home Edition at the Lavalys
website.

I just compared AIDA to Everest Home Edition and they appear to be virtually
identical as noted by dsmcd.

This is either a case of money talks and walks or a blatant copy of
AIDA...............IMO!!!

The truth is out there. You just have to look in the right places and ask

I installed Everest Professional trial version:

-Everest's "report wizard" screen prompts are identical to
AIDA32's except for logo.
-Everest's CSV reports are identical to AIDA32's reports,
including each line item's layout and identifier number
(4th column).
-I suspect the command line parameters are the same, though
I haven't checked 100% thoroughly.

It's great when someone has the chance to make some money from their
programming efforts but what is so d&mn difficult about telling the truth???

Why not just say something like: "I got an offer that I couldn't refuse"
rather than say what was said? Of course it is entirely possible that AIDA
was a project intended to go commercial as soon as all the major bugs were
squashed. ;-)) (Note: The Lavasys website seems to have been created last
year (2003). Just some food for thought!)

Also, a thanks to all the FREE Beta testers of AIDA might have been nice as
well!!!

What a shame,... the man should become an erudite with an online

tool...
