Hello:

I used to have an entry in the Run box --at Start icon--Event Viewer which allowed me to view pirot events in my Windows XP, especially errors and rebooting problems.

My Run items seem to have been deleted, possibly by some cleaning up of the registry...

Can someone tell me exactly how to spell--or abbreviate that Run item for: Eventviewer so I can see if there are any serious errors in the logs? i've tried a number of combos with no luck...

Thanks in advance:

-Eli

How will you KNOW if it's a "serious" error or not!??

If your system appears to be running smoothly, stop with the obsessive
event viewer thing.

It will save you years on your life expectancy.

Type: eventvwr | Click OK

Sometimes you have to type: eventvwr.msc | Click OK

If Run is Missing From Start Menu

If you are using a stand alone computer...

Pressing the Windows key + the R key will open Run.

With the XP Start Menu...
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button |
Advanced tab | Scroll down and check:
Run command | Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

With the Classic Start Menu...
Right click the Start button | Properties |
Start Menu tab | Customize button |
Check: Display Run | Click OK | Click Apply | Click OK

If you have XP Pro or XP Home and the above did not work...

Go here...
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

Read the instructions at the top of the page.
57. Right hand side.
Restore the Run Command

norun.reg is the file that you want.
-----

If you have XP Pro and the above did not work...

Open Group Policy...
Start | Run | Type: gpedit.msc | Click OK |

Navigate to >>
User Configuration\Administrative Templates\Start Menu and Taskbar\
Remove Run menu from Start Menu
Set to Not Configured.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer

Value Name: NoRun
Data Type: REG_DWORD
Value Data: 0 or 1
0 (or not in the registry) = The policy is disabled or not configured. The
Run command appears.
1 = The policy is enabled. The Run command is removed.

Hi Eli.

You can type "eventvwr" which will launch 'eventvwr.msc'.

If you'd like to make a custom Management console with all your favorite snap-ins as a 'one stop shop' in the future do this:
From the Run line enter 'mmc'
Then click File | Add/Remove snap-in
Then click the Add button.

This will pop the 'Add Standalone snap-in' window from which you can choose all your favorite snap-ins in the list like Device Manager, Event Viewer, etc...add them to the console, add as many as you want. When finished, save it with a unique name like Eli.msc in a convenient location like your Work folder or on the desktop.

In the future, just launch eli.msc and you won't have to go hunting around the control panel or admin tools again <grin>

You can create a shortcut to event viewer on your desktop. Then drag it to your quick launch bar.
