Event log service fails

I have a W2K server that is running AD and Exchange 5.5.
All my Event viewer logs are empty. The Event log service
says that it is started, but I am unable to stop or
restart the service; they are all greyed out. My McAfee
Groupsheild service won't start either. It is hanging. The
server has all the latest updates. Can anyone help.
