Description:

occurred:

the logon request.

Thanks Marina,

There are 2 nics. They fall into different subnet. One
internal ip, one Internet ip. The PDC is located in the
internal network.

2 default gateways for 2 nics. 1 default to
router/firewall. the other to internal network.

Any clues?

The internal nic should not have a gateway. The external nic should point to
your router.
Did you check the bindingorder and made sure the internal nic is on top?

Marina

Dear Marina,

I wipe out the gateway for internal nic and alter the
binding order as advised. I will see how it goes. But
could you bear explain the settings, bear with my
ignorance please.

Thanks

Which settings do you want me to explain?
Can you give me the ipconfig/all from the server? And on from a client?

Marina

The problem still persists. The frequency is roughly every
2 hrs.
Also, some other users and I(as noticed in the log) had
occasion problems signing in the exchange server to
retrieve mail. The log generated is EventID13003 source :
MSExchange POP3, HrLookupCredentials() call failed. But
on retry all users are okay.

Do you think the problems are related?

Sorry for so longwinded. Thanks again

Hi,

Where is the 192.168.3.110 coming from (WINS)? It should be the same as your
server-IP. I don't see DNS on your nic. It should be your server-IP.
DNS on your external nic should be your server-IP. The ISP-DNS-numbers
should be set in tab Forwarders of your DNS-server.
In DHCP-server you should have options 003, 006 and 015 and if you have W9x,
ME or NT4-clients, also options 044 and 046 (0x8).

Marina

Marina,

We do maintain a WINS inhouse. 3.110. but for inhouse use
only. We do not use inhouse DNS for name resolution. All
our mails go thru the Internet.

Also, the local address is fixed, no dhcp is used.
so, I should set all the DNS address to the server IP? or
my DNS ip?

Gazebo

Setup DNS on the server and let it point to your server-IP. Add options 003,
006 and 015 to DHCP-server, Scope options.
DNS on servernic(s) should point to your server-IP. The ISP-DNS-numbers
should be set in tab Forwarders of DNS-server.
DHCP is a no-brainder. I suggest you install it and let the clients obtain
the IP automatically from the DHCP-server. This will automatically push the
DNS and WINS (options 044 and 046 (0x8) in Scope options) as well.

Marina

Marina,

I still could not understand your DNS field setting for
the NIC. Do you mean I should set the DNS field to my DNS
server IP and let the forward tab isp-dns entry to do the
resolution?

Also, at last, I found out the problem. I had an invalid
entry in the lmhosts when render the server unable to
local the PDC!!! After I correct it, the netlogon error
is gone. Also, there seems to be no more error login from
my outlook.

That is interesting. I want to know more about explanation
of nbtstat as there is still some warning message like
name conflicts, etc.
Your help out there is very much appreciated!

Gazebo

Hi Gazebo,

Yep, set DNS on your servernic(s) to the server-IP and the ISP-DNS-numbers
should be set in tab Forwarders of DNS-server.
Can you give us the whole message from nbtstat? Also in the eventlogs, there
should be a line 0028: can you give us that line? If you convert it to
decimal, it will show which IP is having the conflict.

Marina

Marina,

I could not find event ID 0028, but 4319 - source NetBT.
In the message I found the IP reported. It is my DNS. And
I could not find any one in conflict. I am using CHI

The nbtstat -n, as instructed by the event message to
locate the conflict, is attached below :-

Hi Gazebo,

Are you working in different subnets (because of 2 nics)? Can you elaborate
on that?

About DNS: properties of your servernic, TCP/IP, DNS should be pointing to
your server-IP (the one that has DNS-server running).
So DNS on both nics should point to server-IP?
Get it?
