I had this same problem on one of my computers at the
Danville CA, Family History Center, which has now been
solved. That computer was taking 5 minutes to shut down
or logoff.

Go to Microsoft's Knowldege Base at,
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=fh;EN-
US;KBHOWTO, and do a search for Event ID 1000. In one of
the articles that appears, there is a program you can
download from Microsoft that fixes this problem. I do not
remember what is was called, but one of the articles will
tell you where it can be found.
