All-

I have a 2000 server being used as a mail relay. I have
the DC in the Preferred DNS server entry and an ISP DNS
server in the Alternate DNS server entry.
The server gets event ID 1000 about 8 times a day. I
looked up KB Article 261007 but I'm pretty sure I have
everything set up correctly.
Both the Preferred and the Alt are reachable via a ping
and a nslookup query.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I have gotten serveral wierd thing happen when I use Windows as a relay. A
lot of event ID's I get are 'ignorable' according to MS when I call them on
it.

If you are not seeign any jams in your queues then there is nothing to be
worried about. Log polution is normal on most windows systems.

Just in case, make sure you have your relay server in reverse and forward
DNS. If your are looking up DNS on all incomming messages, then the server
relaying to you needs also to be in reverse and forward DNS.

Forward to your relay with the IP specifically: [127.0.0.1]

After all that is done, then it should be working just fine.

Thanks for the advice Timothy. But I'm not really DNS savvy
How do I make an entry for reverse DNS? Is it like an A
record, but for reverse lookup?

Thanks

In your DNS you have 2 Zones:

1. Forward
2. Reverse

You will have to craete a reverse zone and the zone name is not like the
domain name, but its the IP. So you reverse zone will be:

127.x.x.x Subnet (this is how it will display in the DNS). In the zone
corresponding to your IP, make a PTR (Pointer) record.

If you have no reverse zone you will ahve to set one up. Each IP subnet is
its own reverse zone. Widows has a great wizard for all of this as well.
