Event 1517 - HSPERFDATA folder - hive clean-up

I just noticed that in my
C:\Documents and Settings\name\Local Settings\Temp folder I have a
"hsperfdata_name" folder - that's something new - so I checked google
and found others with same question - " What is it ? and why just
appearing recently ? " ( I purge that folder every month or so and first
time I've ever seen it.) Others report " The problem this is causing is
the profile cannot be deleted at logoff, can anyone suggest what is
causing this?" (
http://www.tek-tips.com/viewthread.cfm?qid=1081416&page=6 ) also
http://www.talkaboutprogramming.com/group/comp.lang.java.machine/messages/16432.html

I checked my Application Event log and I too have an error when shutting
down - profile can not be unloaded. I see a fix a MS website , but it
just purposely kills the profile - doesn't really "cure it". Can
someone tell me - do I care if I get event #1517 at shutdown ? Should I
bother with the MS fix ? ( Hive cleanUP)

You should clean out your %tmp% folder more often.

If you experience slow logoff (with Saving your settings for most of the
time while logging off), you are having profile unload problems.

If you see a lot of Userenv/1517, Userenv/1524 or Userenv/1500 errors in the
Event Viewer, download and install the User Profile Hive Cleanup Service.

This decreased my shutdown time a bunch. Takes any where from 10 to 20
seconds to shutdown.

C:\Program Files\UPHClean\uphclean.exe is added.

The User Profile Hive Cleanup service gets added to Services and
uphclean.exe will run all the time. I am one that doesn't like to have any
extra services running, but I am sold on UPHClean.

Thanks, Wes

Shutdown was not a problem. I did download the Hive cleanup and it does
now unload my profile properly. By using hive cleanup, am I "fixing" the
problem ( a workaround) rather than "curing/preventing " the problem
from happening ?
Any idea what causes "hsperfdata" to now appear ? I'm always cleaning up
the temp files and have never seen this before on any of my PC's - any
certain app / download that may have caused this folder to now appear ?

"UPHClean is a service that once and for all gets rid of problems with user
profile not unloading." It is a band-aid, but one that works pretty well,
in my opinion.

hsperfdata is some kind of Sun Java deal. It also seems to be some kind of
a bug. Make sure that you have the latest version of Sun Java. Or do what
I did a long time ago, uninstall Sun java and don't worry about all the java
crap. I uninstalled Sun Java for other reasons, nothing to do with
hsperfdata, which I had never heard of before your post.
