Event # 11708 (installation failure) - How to debug ?

I get setup failure for Quickbooks 2006 on an XP machine.

Event code 11708 is put into the application event log.

The failure happens when setup says "setup wizard is preparing system"
(paraphrasing from memory.)

QB support says it's not their fault and I can't argue with them
becuase setup dies before it even creates any directories or copies
any files.

The machine is patched XP/Pro. AV and anti-spyware software is OFF.

There is no prior copy of this software on the system. I've done a
reboot prior to running setup.

I can copy the CD and run setup from the C drive with the same
results, so it's not the CD.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix or troubleshoot this?

Thanks

Quick Books needs to have administrator permissions. I have also seen
problems with it if the default permissions have been changed on your folder
structure. Are you logged on as an administrator? Are you accepting the
default installation path? Have the file permissions for the Program Files
folder been changed? Are you using any software that monitors/blocks
registry changes? Even if the software is not active it may have changed
registry permissions. Quick Books is not very tolerant of anything other
than a default Windows XP installation. I have seen cases where a clean
install of XP had to be done then Quick Books installed before anything else
in order to get it working. Much of the problems are due to Quick Books
checking for unauthorised use on a network.

Thanks. I'll go there, but we've been on the phone with QB support and
I sort of assumed that the support folks were familiar with what is
discussed in the forums.

I've posted to the usenet QB group with no response.

Thanks. It's a stand-alone machine. No multiuser stuff.

We're running as administrator and it's an XP/pro machine. It's a
client's machine and I don't know it's entire history but the guy is
an account that doesn't screw with his computer.

We never get to select and choices.

It is a Gateway computer that comes with an amazing amount of
crapware.

I've turned off AV software and there is no anti-spyware running.

Are you upgrading or is it a new install? It sounds like working with Quick
Books support until the issue is resolved is your best bet.

There was an uninstall and I'm beginning to think that it's part of
the problem, but h*ll, we were on the phone with QB and they told us
to uninstall and try to reinstall.

Uninstall QB then remove any leftover folders and registry entries. Be sure
to backup the registry first. Then try reinstalling.

Here's a good utility to backup the registry.
