evaluating XPe, diskless question

R

Ravi [MS]

*CPCI support -- XPe has it
*diskless support -- XPe supports PXE boot so long as
your BIOS does
*headless support -- XPe supports, so long as your BIOS
supports not having a VGA driver
*boot identically -- XPe supports in tandem w/BXP for
multicast clients
*flash-based operation -- XPe supports

The question you have IMHO is whether you can run multi-
cast remote boot w/flash, right?

Thanks,

Roger,
Please keep in mind that not every user of the product is participating in
the newsgroups. In fact, I'm sure just a small minority of our customers do.
The fact that some people have trouble is not necessarily indicative of it
"being difficult to configure". I'm not saying some features are very
intuitive to configure and there is TONS of documentation and whitepapers
and FAQs and XPe chat archives - if only more people would refer to it,
then you would see so many of the same questions on certain features being
posted to the newsgroup for the last 18 months.

I'm also sure that you realize that in the world of tech support you rarely
ever hear of the success stories when things are going swimmingly, you only
hear of the problems people experience.

Also, you are a rarity, you actually checked the archives of the newsgroup
<grin> If more people did that before posting their configuration issues,
they'd resolve their problems so much more quickly.

Thanks for the interest Roger, don't hesitate to spam your questions we're
happy to have you <grin> and there are lots of MVPs and other embedded
developers here that are very helpful in this NG.

Regarding the server/client diskless storage question:
I think you're referring to Remote Boot? If so, then once the client has
booted into the image it has pulled down from the server, the server is no
longer needed, it can be taken offline. Of course, if you needed to reboot
the client again, and the server is offline it won't boot past POST, right?
So once the image is loaded into RAM on the client, the server is no longer
needed for the client to operate.

Thanks.
Andy
