I use Eudora for email, and email attachments are saved in an
attachments dir, when they are downloaded. I would assume, that as
soon as the file is created, it would be checked by the real time
virus monitor?
My guess is that AV with mail scanner are aware of the POP and IMAP
protocols and scan attachments in transit. You could test it with EICAR
to see if this is the case.
Ideally you'd scan server-side and client-side.
