estimated time remaining

Hello,

Several MS progs and processes show an 'Estimated Time Remaining" box. It
seems to me to be hopelessly inaccurate. The time estimate jumps up & down,
and only becomes meaningful over the last few seconds.

Am I doing something wrong or is this a fundamental law of computers ?

It is a fundamental law of Microsoft software as far as I can tell.
At least I've never seen MS get it right, but I have seen others do a
reasonable job of it.

Haven't you learned yet that Microsoft programs are very badly written?

Linux and Macs don't do this.....

so its not the hardware that's the problem... especially vista would
report moving and copying times of thousands of days (years).

You're not doing anything wrong. It happens on other installs besides MS
programs. I consider it a minor annoyance, not a show-stopper.

I remember installing programs on my Vic-20 computer using cassette
tape. Now that took a long time and there was no progress indication on
the screen.

In order for that to happen Mike, a person would in fact have to have
read and fully understood or grasped (compohended) what they are
reading.
It would of course help if they under stood the definition of the word
Estimated and the word HINT.
I may have replied, Google (define:estimated AND hint) Google can be a
good friend.

This goes back to way before Windows or even DOS were a twinkling in
anyone's wallets.

I recall getting "jumping estimates" back on AOS on Novas, most notably
during compressing backups. And I'm sure they weren't new then.
