Establishing a Newsgroup Reader on Outlook 2003

I'm trying to set up a newsgroup reader in Outlook 2003.

I use the help menu which says to customize my toolbar. I select "Add
remove buttons" and then select "Go" under the Categories and try to
find "news" under the Commands on the right side, to drag over to the
"Go", but "news" is not there. I looked in a number of other
categories, but don't find news anywhere.

Any ideas?

To get the News command back, go back to the Programs tab in Control Panel |
Internet Options and change the default newsreader to Outlook Express. If
OE prompts you to make it your default newsreader the next time you launch
it, clear the "Always perform this check..." box and then click the No
button.

You may need to reset the Menu Bar and/or restart Outlook and/or reboot your
machine in order to complete the process. Not everyone is reporting success
with this method, but try it and see what happens. If all else fails, you
can always create a desktop shortcut to Outlook Express and include the
/outnews switch -- that gives you the same result as accessing the
newsreader via the News command in Outlook.

you can't find a newsreader in outlook because there IS none.........there
IS a newsgroup reader in outlook express however - very frustrating to have
to have two email programs running - would be much better if outlook
included the news reader.......along wtih several other excellent outlook
express features *mumble grumble*

If you launch OE with the "newsonly" option, mail features will
disappear and you'll have no reason to continue to be frustrated.

"C:\Program Files\Outlook Express\msimn.exe" /newsonly

the space between the last " and / is very important too. that messed me up
for a few days.

All,

Thanks for the tips. I tried the first tip about resetting the internet
options and that restored the news entry without even a reboot. I then
also tried the OE solution which also worked just fine, but will stick
with the OL to keep things simple.

Thanks VERY MUCH for all the assistance. You, who answer these questions,
are lifesavers.

The easiest way (i.e. it's rather silly but it works without hassle - at
least it always has for me) is to do Tools - Mail and News - Read News from
Internet Explorer. Believe it or not. I never bother trying to access news
from Outlook - it seems to have not been part of their thinking when they
designed it and you have to mess about too much for my liking.

Regards

David
