esacape charactor

could anyone explain how to get an escape charactor when logged into a cisco
router? I am using windowx xp from the command prompt and have tried various
key combinations and keep failing. When scrolling thru a config and wanting
to abort I cannot. The router will say "type escape sequence to abort"..
