Errors with Windows Explorer

I have been having trouble with windows explorer the past week or so.
Last week Windows Explorer crashed, and did not restart, and when i tried
using the task manager to close the troublesome program, Dr Watson came up
with the same error (has experienced problems, needs to close, etc)
When i rebooted the computer, it hit 11 oclock, and norton came up for its
scan, but then nothing else would open. And when i tried pausing the scan,
norton froze too.
I rebooted into safe mode, but then when it got to loading the desktop, it
came up with the windows explorer error (has experienced problems thing) kept
coming up.
Then it kept trying to restart, but couldnt.
I managed to get into system restore and get it back to sep 13th, since i
had to click whateveri could to stop that stupid error window coming back.

Anyway, it seemed to work ok, but now some of my programs have gone awol.
Spider solitare has turned into [][][][][][] on the start menu, and crashes
windows explorer when i try to open it.
A few programs in accessories and system tools have transformed into .lnk
files, which windows wont open, and now the pc is going really slowly, and
just earlier, it would not boot up from standby.
I had to reboot it, and now it is working ok, but if it happens again, i
really would like to know if anyone can offer advice on how to fix this
problem.

It's hard to give specific advice on how to handle a problem such as this.
First always, always have a full and complete backup. Second, what changed
from the time everything was working fine to when the problem occurred?
Third what is the malware status of the computer? What programs do you use?

the backups i have are of all the files on the pc, but from when we bought
it, and i cant really do a whole system restore until i get some stupid cd's
to chuck my files onto.
I found a thread yesterday that said to check the eventlog, i did so and it
said in the properties of one of the logs i found that explorer.exe had
crashed in user32.dll
I assume this means a few system files may be/have been corrupted, and
possibly still are.

Also, i might be right in thinking that a particular registry key has been
edited that windows exlporer doesnt restart?
I havent done much involving the registry, but if this is the case, then i
might want to stop using my registry cleaner for a while :S

Firstly you need to quote at least a part of the message to which you reply,
otherwise it is out of context. You may not realize it, but this is a
newsgroup, not a board or forum. You are accessing it with the web
interface which is clunky and awful. You'd be better off using a newsreader
as many do. Those with a newsreader often times download only the most
recent messages so they can't see the previous ones in the thread.

XP comes with a newsreader, Outlook Express. Here is an article on how to
set up OE for newsgroups:

So you have used a registry cleaner? Did you run it right before this
problem happened? In any event, though I can't say that the registry
cleaner is the source of the problems, they can cause more problems than
they fix, particularly if you let it make changes automatically. Unless you
know what you are doing, and only use the registry cleaner to point out
issues which you decide if you want to correct, it's best to not use it.

There is no substantiated evidence that using a registry cleaner helps. In
most cases it does the opposite.
