Error with external HD

I've been trying to do a backup to an external HD via USB2 connection. But
it keeps generating the following error:
"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file
\Device\HarddiskVolume3\Data.bkf. The data has been lost. This error may be
caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network connection. Please
try to save this file elsewhere."

I also get a similar error prompt when doing a manual backup by dragging the
files to the HD.

Is anyone familiar with its meaning?

Thanks for your suggestions always.

Howdie, tiki2k!

I've been trying to do a backup to an external HD via USB2
connection. But it keeps generating the following error:
"Windows was unable to save all the data for the file
\Device\HarddiskVolume3\Data.bkf. The data has been lost. This error
may be caused by a failure of your computer hardware or network
connection. Please try to save this file elsewhere."

Maybe the USB-Drive is corrupt. Have you tried to reformat the drive? It
could also be, that the drive is defect. Try to check it with a
HDD-Checker-Tool from the manufacturer.

I've seen this a dozen or more times.

Every time it has been because USB wasn't installed properly.

You mean the USB hardware or driver not properly installed?
I have other USB devices that seems to work fine. If it's the driver, how do
I reinstall that in Windows 2000 Pro?
Thank you.
