Hi all

I have googled this, used MSN search too ;-) But have not found an answer. I
am receiving the following errors when I try to log on to a system. XP Pro
SP2 patched current as of feb 06 updates.

Excuse the name it is my wife's computer, bought it for our anniversary a
couple years back, hence the goofy name. The system was clean installed,
reinstall, on 5/13/05 and has been running ever since with no problems. It is
a Dell Dimension 4100 and the reinstall was with the OEM CD.

I have checked the event logs back until 9/05 and there are no problems
reported relating to hardware or OS.

I first noticed the problem when I RDP'd in to update Windows Defender and
found I couldn't log on. I can gain access by booting to Safe Mode
wo/networking.

Anyone got any ideas? I really don''t want to have to rebuild this box as it
has TONS of apps and data. She is a programmer at her work and often brings
projects home over the weekend and holidays. Last time I did the rebuild I
spent almost 10 hours on it. Of course I also watched a few bad movies while
doing it ;-)

Thanks in advance folks. I am also email PSS with this and will report back
what I hear from them.

Thanks for the fast reply. I have run Dell Diags for memory and subsystems.
All is good. And none of the REG keys in the article KB 310794 are present on
the system I am having problems with. I didn't do any upgrade anyway. The
system has been as configured for 9 months, except fo WUP.

This is very odd to me.

Sometimes if there is a memory problem,or a corrupted file or, an access
rights permission problem- it may happen.

Glad to know that you have already written to PSS team.

Rick

Thank you for helping, unfortunately this didn't work. I
had tried this before but just retried in case I goofed
somewhere. Happens more often than I want my clients
to know ;-)

I can't find the REG keys relating to cryptography on
the problem box, don't have them on my ws either.

Anyway thank you for your time.

Sorry for the lag in posting the final outcome of this. Been a busy
couple weeks, not a valid excuse, but...

Anyway PSS said that this ws the OEM's, Dell, problem since they
DO NOT provide support for OEM software. Okay I caontact Dell, they
say it's not us call Microsoft. We all danced a while and I said screw
it! Walked away for a few days to calm down I did give the wife a new
PC first. Otherwise I would be deaf by now.

When I got back to the broken system I did a little more web serching
and then bit the bullet and went for it. I did a repair installation
with the OEM cd (see note below). Surprise! Everything was still
there, apps, settings,
profiles etc.. I did have to update the system again because all the
patches after SP2 were gone but that was it. It reactivated and is
working fine tonight.

I was very surprised that this went off so well. I think it may have
helped by my having a XP SP2 OEM cd to do this with. I prepared the
slipstreamed OEM cd using AutoStreamer , available from here
http://www.simplyguides.net/guides/using_autostreamer/using_autostreamer.shtml

This is a guide to using the application and has links to all the
needed files and extras. Good stuff.

Hope this hels some other soul in need and if there are questions
please post back or email.
