Error while entering URL

Hi
I am getting a error while entering any URL into the ie address bar. Say I enter www.google.com or any other URL it throws a error "Cannot fine www.google.com. Make sure the path or the internet address is correct"
But when I type in http://www.google.com the page opens up and it does not throws me any error
Can some one please tell me what could have possibly gone wrong. I had couple of viruses on my computer which I have removed. Is it possible that these viruese must have overwritten some settings.

This may be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware, parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.
