Error opening XL file

We recently loaded Office (XP) on Windows 2000 operating on a laptop. Some particular XL files do not open. Error message "Cannot use object linking and embedding" appears in a popup box and XL opens without the file. This and further XL files just cannot be opened after this. Same message appears for all. After restarting XL, if any other file is opened, and then this file is opened, the error: "This file was not saved properly during previous attempt" appears and allows correct saving of the file.
Is there any specific patch that needs to be loaded to take care of this?

Were you hit by the MSBlast worm?

One poster (Lutz Meyer) guessed that this was the cause of his problems. I
haven't seen any confirmation/denial, but you may want to read his post:

Post back with your results. I'm curious if that was the problem. (It's come
up quite a few times since MSBlast hit.)
