I tried to install an old IBM scanner but then i decided
to delete all the files... however now when i log on i
get 2 error msg saying it cant find the scanner files ..
& secondly that since windows cannot find them i should
edit the registy..... pls help....

Don't mess about with the registry, but instead, it looks
like XP is looking for some programs on startup which you
deleted, so reboot and make a note of the programs it's
trying to run, then run 'msconfig' & untick them from the
startup tab!, before doing this I would do a system
restore backup 1st!

Or you can download a program like a trial version
of 'system mechanic' from www.iolo.com, you can use it
for 30 days, but if you unistall it when it's getting
close to the end of the trial period, then remove all
instances of 'system mech' from the registry and then
reinstall it, you can use it for a further 30 days, I've
been using the same 'trial version' for about 2 years
now, hope this helps!

You say that you "i decided to delete all files." That sounds like you
manually deleted them rather than going to Control Panel Add or Remove
Programs to UNINSTALL the scanner software. Which probably would have
avoided the problem. Maybe you did UNINSTALL properly, and the uninstall
wasn't clean. That can happen. Anyway, write down the names of the files
that the error messages says Windows can't find. Then once booted to your
Windows desktop, click your Start button, then click Run,

type: regedit

Then click the OK button. The Registry Editor will open. Click the Edit
menu, click Find. Type the name of the first file that Windows can't find.
Then make sure that the Key, Values, and Data options are checked, click the
Find Next button. The Keys are in the right pane, and the Strings are in
the Left Pane. When the Registry Editor finds a String in the right pane,
with the name of the file, right click that String and then left click
Delete. Then press the F3 key to continue the search until you get a dialog
box saying the entire Registry has been searched (just in case there's more
than one mention of that file in the Registry). Then do the entire process
again typing the name of the second file which Windows can't find. When
finished deleting the Strings with mentions of those files, close the
Registry Editor and then reboot your system.

Before editing the Registry, it's always a good practice to open System
Restore (Start button/All Programs/Accessories/System Tools/System Restore)
and create a Restore Point. Just in case you delete a wrong item from the
Registry, you'll have a current Restore Point to Restore from.
