Error Msg Not compatible with Windows XP

My friend, who is very computer illiterate, keeps getting
this message "Not compatible with Windows XP" wenever he
trys to install Direct X or use windows update.

It may be due to corrupt catalog database.

The Software You Are Installing Has Not Passed Windows Logo Testing to
Verify It's Compatibility with Windows XP.
