Error Messages when Saving a PowerPoint 2007 document

While working on a PowerPoint 2007 document, after making changes, I go to
save the document and I get two messages:

1st is: Press the esc key to cancel saving

then comes:

Microsoft Office PowerPoint Compatibility Checker
the following features in this presentation are not supported by earlier
versions of PP. etc.

The SmartArt graphic and any text in it cannot be edited when using earlier
versions of PowerPoint . (Slide 2, 3, and so on ........ through 15)

Is there any way around this? What could be causing this?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!! RS

I don't think you can get out of the "press esc key to cancel saving." Just
be patient.

However, you are probably saving as 97-2003 format by default, and this may
be causing the "press esc" message -- or at least it can make saving take
longer because the file sizes are usually bigger. (I see this message
sometimes even when saving as 2007 format, though.) To change the default
save format to 2007 file format, go to Office Button | PPT Options | Save
and choose "PowerPoint Presentation" in the "save files in this format"
dropdown.

You can disable the automatic compatiblity checker by going to the Office
Button | Prepare | Run Compatibility Checker. Let it run, then untick the
box for "check compatibility when saving as 97-2003 formats."
