Whenever I get an error message dialog box in windows XP
it disappears almost instantly. Are there any solutions
to fix this?

Is it a command windows that pops up for a moment when you try to run a
command or program? If so first open a command prompt by typing cmd,
navigate to the directory where your program is, and then type the program
name at the prompt to run it. This way the window should stay open and you
will be able to see what the error is.

It's not a command window, it's the Windows XP Critical
Stop dialog. Whenever I get a critical stop dialog it
disappears before I can read it or before I even click OK.

Run eventvwr.msc to open your even viewer and check for it there. Any
critical stop errors will probably be listed and you can hopefully find out
what is causing them.
