I receive an error message when I log on to some of my
programs which reads as follows: "There is no disk in the
drive. Please insert a disk into drive\Device\Hardisk1
\DR2". I deleted and reloaded the program and the
message still appears. The programs technical support
people tell me that I may need to install some anti-virus
protection on my computer to eliminate this error. Does
that sound correct? I don't want to purchase an anti-
virus program unless it's absolutely necessary.

I don't know if a virus is responsible for your error - I don't think
so, actually - but having an antivirus program installed on a Windows
machine is absolutely necessary. If you are too cheap to pay for one,
then get AVG free from Grisoft. As for your error, why not try what the
program's tech support suggested and see if that fixes things?

Anti-virus software is as necessary as oxygen and water.
There are some free-for-the-first year deals out there,
search Google for them. Also turn on your Internet
Connection Firewall (built-in to XP) and get anti-spyware
software (also free). All are absolutely REQUIRED, as are
the Windows Critical Updates (also free).

However, installing anti-virus software to correct a
program error (you don't mention the name of the program)
does not sound right. Please provide additional
information AFTER you tighten security on your computer.
See paragraph #1 and do it TODAY.

Good Luck !

As someone mentioned AVG AntiVirus is good for free:
http://www.grisoft.com

I'd recommend going to http://www.symantec.com and look around the site for
the free online scanning option and scan for and remove virii before getting
AVG, since some of the newer virii will disable AntiVirus programs.

One must be either brave or plain daft to surf the Internet without an
anti-virus program. If you're planning to purchase a new PC in the

You dont need one running 24/7 to protect yourself. You only need common
sense.
