Almost every time i switch off I get a splash screen headed "end program -
explorer.exe" I have to click "end now" to switch off. When I switch on
again I have to restore my active desktop.
Any ideas how I can track down the error...it is very annoying.

If you made any change to the system just before that started happening, try
reversing it.

Perhaps opening System Restore under All Programs => Accessories => System
Tools and restoring a restore point that predated the problem will fix the
problem.

If you can't find the fix, pressing Ctrl + Alt + Del to bring up the Windows
Task Manager and closing explorer.exe (selecting it and clicking on End
Process) before you shut down should work.
