Error Message

I've been getting the following error message recently.

"16 bit Windows Subsystem

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application."

It has popped up when I've tried to install some recent applications and
game demos.

Can someone enlighten me as to why this is happening?
