error message when installing programme

I'm getting the following error message when I try to open the installer for
a programme I've used on previous computers:

16-bit MS-DOS Subsystem
path to the program that you are trying to start or install
C:\Windows\System32\Autoexec.nt The system file is not suitable for running
MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the
application

I've been to the help page and followed the instructions to the letter but
am still having the problem. Does anyone know something else I could try?

Yes it is, and as I said, I followed the instructions to the letter! I don't
know what's wrong...

You might look over the following articles but it would help if you
mentioned the program (googling for "run (my_programs_name) in Windows XP"
might yield some results.)
