error message on start up.

i am running windows xp, when the start up screen appears i hear a couple of
beeps and on the screen it says "error, bad check sum" then "default
configuration used" i get the option to either press del to set up or f1 to
continue so i just ignore it and continue. im a novice with computers so i
havent a clue what this is, any ideas? thanks very much

For whatever reason, your BIOS data has been reset. The beeps
are just an alerting mechanism. While a reset isn't necessarily a
bad thing, the options inside BIOS are now at a Factory Default
value. This may cause devices to be enabled/disabled that were
not before this happened. Also, Default values may not be set up
for optimal computer performance.
If you aren't familiar with BIOS settings, you can download the
Motherboard manual from the manufacturer. That document (.Pdf)
should have a section dedicated to what/how BIOS settings are
available.
It's likely the PC will continue to work - If however you have
issues or this problem re-occurs you'll need to take the PC to a
local Computer shop and have them check it for you.
