Error Message:Low virtual memory

Java

Ever since installing Norton Anti-virus, when I try to
start AOL, I get a message saying something to the effect
of, "Your system is low on virtual memory. Windows is
increasing your paging file size. Some applications may
be denied." I can't get onto any applications and I still
get error messages with my anti-virus software. Any help??

You can manually adjust the size(s) of the paging files(e) via System
Properties, Advanced, Performance Options, (Virtual Memory) Change...

You may need to defragment your drive first in order to make a larger
pagefile.sys. You may also need to place the paging file on another
drive if free space is tight. And then reboot.

As to what sizes ("Initial" and "Maximum") you should set, there are
many opinions and it depends in part on your hardware (RAM and disk),
software, and usage....

More details might help someone make a recomendation. For now just
increase both figures by say 20% to get started.

Well _nothing_ is foolproof. ;-)
Since it is a (administrative) user GUI interface there isn't much to
go wrong. A current backup of critical data or a disk image is
always a wise precaution. Regular registry backups are also
important IMHO.

I am not there, don't use Norton A-V or AOL and ....
I am providing only the information you need to implement a larger
paging file on your system. Typically that would solve the "low on
virtual memory" problem. Your milage may vary.

Suggest you review in Windows HELP the entry on "changing paging file
size".

This is what I would do (FWIW):
Schedule a CHKDSK on all drives and reboot
Run the defragmenter on the target drive (with most all other
programs not running (especially any Symantec stuff)
Re-size the paging file and reboot.
