I installed Windows XP Pro and I am getting this message
when I try to do some installations:

Files that are required for Windows to run properly have
been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain
system stability, Windows must restore the original
versions of these files.

Insert your Windows XP Pro Service Pack 1 CD-Rom now.

Retry | More Info | Cancel

This was after I downloaded SP1 from Windows update, and I
put my Windows XP CD in, like the message said, but it
didn't do anything. If I hit cancel it would give me a
message like "If you cancel, Windows my run unstable" and
some other things.

I have no clue what to do.

Put the CD in the drive. Click START|RUN, type "cmd"
<enter> (no quotes)
Type "sfc /scannow" <enter> (no quotes; note the space
between "c" and "/"

I followed these instructions and I got the same message
while it was checking the system "Put in the Windows XP
SP1 CD". I don't think I have an SP1 CD, because I just
downloaded SP1 it off of the update. Should I upgrade
windows from the cd again?

Just Click Retry again. SFC has some bugs which causes it
to sometimes ask for the disk over and over. (I've also
seen it ask for the Profession version when running on
Home version, as well as wanting the Windows Whistler CD
which doesn't exist *sigh*)
If the problem persists, reinstall Service Pack 1.

I have XP HE(code name whistler) and the disk as well.
Therefore I have a Whistler disk. Aida32 can dig out this
info for you along with any code names for your OS. Good
luck.

Windows Whistler was never released as a retail nor OEM
product, so the code referring to it should NOT have
appeared in SFC. It would have been safer for Microsoft
to have just kept it the string as "Windows 2000
Professional" and changed it later when they had the final
product name.
But to our regular users, they don't have a Whistler Disc,
so it's a bug.
