Error message- never seen before- help!

I installed Windows XP Pro and I am getting this message
when I try to do some installations:

Files that are required for Windows to run properly have
been replaced by unrecognized versions. To maintain
system stability, Windows must restore the original
versions of these files.

Insert your Windows XP Pro Service Pack 1 CD-Rom now.

Retry | More Info | Cancel

This was after I downloaded SP1 from Windows update, and I
put my Windows XP CD in, like the message said, but it
didn't do anything. If I hit cancel it would give me a
message like "If you cancel, Windows my run unstable" and
some other things.

I have no clue what to do.

Put the CD in the drive. Click START|RUN, type "cmd" <enter> (no quotes)
Type "sfc /scannow" <enter> (no quotes; note the space between "c" and "/"

I tried that and the same message came up "insert Windows
XP SP1 CD". The thing is, I don't have a SP1 cd, just the
Windows XP Pro cd I bought. I downloaded SP1. Should I
upgrade from the CD?
