error message - help

I am getting the following error message when loading
some software. What is the cause and how do I correct it?

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not
suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows
applications. Choose close to terminate the application.
