Error message "Cannot shift objects off sheet"

When trying to hide columns in a large worksheet, I keep getting this error
message. As a consequence the hide function does not work anymore.
 
I've had this before but found that hiding some of the columns, that you want
to hide, first and then hiding the remaining columns worked.
