I have a home network with 3 machines. Connection to the internet is through
a WinXP SP2 machine using ICS. The network works fine. I can share files
and printers on all machines. The most recent machine is also running WinXP
SP2 and functions fine. It will access the net, update MacAfee AV and so on,
download programs, etc. BUT it will NOT update Windows. I get the error
message above with a note that says that I don't have administrator
privileges. But I do!
I checked the knowledge base and found an article that should work, I think,
Q316524, but I believe there is something missing there at step 14c.

Does anyone have a solution, please?

You are saying that you do not use a proxy server to connect.

Did you continue, and try the catroot2 folder rename?

If truth be told I don't understand the term proxy server.
I tried renaming catroot, although a review of what I did, today, leads me
to suspect that I didn't do it correctly. I will try again this evning and
post another reply

I tried changing catroot2 to old catroot2, but this had no effect.
I have tried a lot of other stuff this evening. My PC is only one week old
and came with SP2 preinstalled. I have an SP2 disc, which I have used
perfectly well on my other machine with XP. As a last resort I
over-installed SP2 from the disc, which went without a hitch - but I still
can't use Windows Update!

Unless anyone has a better suggestion, I will try to connect the new PC
directly to the internet, after reconguring it's network settings, and see if
Windows Update will work correctly, then. At least I would establish, then,
if I really do have a network policy set somewhere which is preventing
connection, or perhaps some sort of network conflict.

I dug around in the beta errors for xp update, and found this. Hopefully I'm
not just wasting time with an old fix.

Open REGEDIT (start/run) to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate
Edit menu, Permissions. Give Administrator and System 'Full Control' and
'Read' permissions

(and)

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer
and find the key named "NoWindowsUpdate" and delete that key if it exists.

Thanks for your help and interest, Mark.
I edited the registry as you suggested.
The full control and read pernmissions were already set.
NoWindowsUpdate key was present, and I deleted it.

Guess what, I still have the same problem - I can't run Widows Update!

I am disappointed that I have sent a message to the Dell Technical Help
people to ask for some assistance, and despite the fact they say that they
will respond within 24 hours, I haven't heard a dickie-bird (word)!

Do you have any experience of conflicts between one XP machine connecting to
the net through another?
Bill

Well, I'm sure the Dell folks are just short handed due to the holiday in
the US (Thanksgiving), I've always seen good things out of their help staff.
(Since I'm here next to my stove, smelling my turkey cooking as I type, you
may get better results from me today :) )

Since you found the Key for 'NoWindowsUpdate', I think you have found the
problem, and maybe something as simple a restart will kick it into action. I
would also now check the settings for update in control panel/system app.

Thanks for your reply, Mark. I hope you enjoyed your turkey! I'm looking
forward to mine at Christmas!

I did what you suggested, but unfortunately it has had no effect. I still
can't connect to Windows Update - or not to version 5, anyway.

I found last evening, that I could connect to version 4, and that it will
work quite happily. It found an Intel driver and two Windows updates, one of
which I have downloaded and installed.

Please could you explain to me what a proxy server is. Is this the other
Win XP PC in my network, through which I access the internet, using Internet
Connection Sharing? If it is, maybe I need to set something on it, in terms
of the network.

Thanks & regards,
Bill

Well, a proxy server is a type of memory of sites visited by LAN members,
offering copies instead of going for another copy. Since you don't know
about it, it is really not an important issue for you. You don't use one.

If version 4 works, I would say something is wrong with your SP2 update
install (or you have not updated)
