Were you sending from home? Since Iowa State University is not
your home ISP. what you are experiencing is normal. For a fuller
explanation see
http://www.postcastserver.com/help/Port_25_Blocking.aspx

As a general rule, the owner of the SMTP server must match the
entity providing your Internet connection.

The available workarounds are as follows:

1. Use webmail for sending (via your browser).
2. Ask Iowa State if they have a port other than '25' for SMTP.
That will get around the problem.
3. Substitute the SMTP server belonging to your home ISP connection.
This is a bit tricky, but if you want to go that route, I can provide
more details.
4. If you frequently send from multiple locations, such as random Wi-Fi
hotspots, get a free Gmail account, configure it for POP access, and
use that for your sending chores.
Gmail uses port 465 for SMTP, which is not blocked like port 25 is.

Email scanning should be turned off in any anti-virus. Also exclude EML
files from the scan. It provides no protection not provided by the regular
resident protection.
Besides that, McAfee and Norton are not compatible with Windows Mail and
Outlook Express and should be uninstalled. The latest version of Trend's
anti-virus seems to be causing problems too.
