Error message 0x80042109 server not found

Outlook retrieves all mail sent to me but gives the error message "0x80042109
Server not found" when I try to send mail from my laptop, here in France.
My ISP is Tiscali and I have no problems with the same machine when working
from home in the UK.
I've tried disabling the virus scanner (AVG 7.5) and the MS firewall but
with no success.
Any suggestions please?

So you are on a remote network?
Set your SMTP server configuration to use authentication or use the SMTP
server of the network that you are on.

I am having the exact error message when I send email. I was fine until
Wednesday of this week. Now I can't send a thing from outlook 2007. What is
the solution, my setting are the same as they were.

The error message might be the same, your situation is not or are you also
with Tiscaly in the UK and now in France? It's better that you start a
thread of your own and include your own details.

Wow excuse me, I thought these were public posts. Just because I'm not in
France doesn't mean that I'm not having the same problem.

The OP is most likely a misconfiguration with his/her SMTP server
considering he/she is on a remote network. You're jumping in with the post
that you have the same issue while you're circumstances are different. In
fact; you didn't include any information of your own. This doesn't make your
post related to the topic and you should create a new thread with your own
info unless, as I stated, you are also a UK Tiscali user in France.
I thought these were public posts.
Yes, and therefore you are free to start posts of your own or contribute
directly with related posts. I didn't state otherwise.
Just because I'm not in
France doesn't mean that I'm not having the same problem.
It's exactly what it means. You have the same symptoms; not the same
problem. Those things can be completely unrelated. Just because two people
are vomiting (symptom), doesn't mean they have the same illness (problem).

Roady,

Thanks for responding,

Yes, I'm on a remote network.
Because I work from various locations, I use several remote networks; some
are wireless and some are hard-wired.
I've tried all of the various permutations of the authentication options but
the result remains the same.
Is there a reliable way of identifying the SMPT adresses of the remote
networks, from their connection detrails?

I've now tried changing the SMTP address to that of the network I'm on but
Outlook still won't send.

Is it my ISP's server that can't be found or could it be the Microsoft
Exchange server that cannot be found? (Sorry, if this is a stupid question.)

What kind of mail account type are you using? Your post assumed POP3 and not
Exchange.

Sorry, it was a stupid question; I'm using a POP3 account.
I've now had Tiscali's long awaited response and it follows your advice that
I should use the settings of the ISP whose network I'm using.
I have tried this for one location, without success, and I'll now try it
again on another network.

This does seem like a very fiddly procedure, if a laptop user has to do this
for every wi-fi site that they might work from. Is this normall?
