error loading Printui.dll while trying to install USB printer

I am continuing to get the following RUNDLL error while trying to install
software for a USB printer: "Error loading Printui.dll %1 is not a valid Win
32 application."
I have defragged the disc, cleaned the disc and have also run a program to
repair the registrythat was supposed to fix this problem. I also tried to
run a limited startup as suggested by the printer company as well as the
usual inactivating firewall/antivirus. Is this printui.dll file part of
Windows XP? or in the printer software? Any suggestions other than wipng out
my hard drive by installing the installlation CD that came with the
computer-would that even be guaranteed to work?

printui.dll is loaded by the spoolsv.exe process as well as explorer.exe.
It is a system file and resides in \windows\system32

Use sfc /scannow in a cmd window to verify the file is the original Windows
file or is not corrupted

I'm sorry, I'm not a real techie, but I follow instructions fairly well. When
you say "cmd window" can you walk me through this? Thanks (Having horrid
flashbacks from the DOS days!) MM

Start > Accessories > Command Prompt

OR

Start > Run > type "cmd.exe" (without quotes) and click OK

In the black window that opens, type "sfc /scannow" (without quotes) and
press Enter. Have your Windows XP CD handy.

If you don't have a WinXP CD, see: http://www.updatexp.com/scannow-sfc.html
