Error loading OS

Before I get to the end of the boot, or right after the Logo comes up I get
a short message saying this: error loading operating system. Thats as far as
I can get. I tried pressing F8 before I got to the message, but that did no
good.
Please any help would be greatly appreciated!

I already tried to log onto safe mode by first pressing the F5 key and then
rebooted it and tried the F8 key twice or 3 times and no go. I can't log onto
safe mode. I recall before that an r was coming up, but not now. All that
happens now is error loading operating system message.

Is this a new problem that has just started occuring when your system
was previously working or have you just upgraded to XP Professional?.

Let me give it another shot for safe mode, hold on. Nope, no luck! I tried
F5, F8, and more than once, try 3 times. Still the same message: Error
loading operating system, at the top left corner of the screen.

No this problem occurred some months ago, but I set the PC off in the corner
and put together another PC from scrap parts of other PCs and buying used
devices from PC stores. My brother decided he wanted a PC to take with him up
North and I told him the Compaq had Windows XP Professional OS running. I
told him there was an error message with some type of r showing. Now I saw
that same message in my classroom example text. So I figured it was just a
matter of time before I fixed it. Now though, the message has changed and
it's the Error loading operating system message. I don't want to delete this
hard drive out but if there is no other option, I'd like a solution and maybe
a few hints on how to do this so it's not so time consuming.

It indicates a hardware or BIOS problem. Make sure that the drives are
properly identified in the BIOS and that the boot order is set
correctly. It could also be caused by a marginal disk or by a damaged
boot sector or invalid partition table. You can boot to the Recovery
Console and issue the fixmbr and fixboot commands on the System disk and
System Partition. If that fails to fix things you can try running a
chkdsk on the disk or run diagnostic utilities from the disk manufacturer.

If you have a recovery disc, you can try the Standard Recovery. See:

"Compaq Presario Desktop PCs - How to Perform a System Recovery"
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...689&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=92868&lang=en#

F1 is the key you need to enter the BIOS setup.

ME, and XP"
