Error linking to excel file

Hello,
MS Access 2003 on XP Pro.

I am trying to get some tables into acces from EXCEL Sheets (preferably as
linked tables, though importing would be fine as well.)

As soon as I do it, I get an error

The file is what I believe to be in the right format (top row is headers,
the rest data.) and it definitely exists.

HELP!!!

They are all .xls
not xlsx, not txt XLS

I got the error trying to do the same thing with the files on my desktop.
I've never had a problem linking files on this computer before.
 
I think I found the error. These are report pulls from a web based system
and some how I think they were saved as HTML instead of excel, even though
the extension is .xls. SAVE AS excel fixed it.
