I bought a new Dell recently that has Windoes XP Home
Edition and Corel Wordperfect. I tried to install Office
2000 and received this error message: "ERROR 1608. Could
not find any previously installed compliant products on
the machine for installing this product". I thought that
Windows XP and Office 2000 were compatable with each
other. I know that the Office 2000 is not an upgrade
version since I used it on my older computer. What could
be wrong and is there a way for me to get around this
problem?

Windows XP is an OS. Office 2000 is an Office Suite. If you have an Office
2000 upgrade disc (which it sounds like you do), you must already own and
have installed a previous version of Office.

The error message you're getting has nothing to do with Windows XP and
Office 2000 being compatible with each other (they are, though). The
message you're getting seems to indicate that you have an upgrade edition of
Office 2000, which requires an older version to upgrade over. Since it
can't find that, the installation isn't succeeding.

I'm sorry, but I don't know enough about Office setup to help you out any
further - you may want to locate an Office newsgroup and ask about this
there.

Yes, Windows XP and Microsoft Office 2000 are compatable with
each other.

Clearly, from the message you are getting, your Office 2000 CD
*is* an upgrade version, and it's not finding a previous version
to upgrade.

Easy fix it to install an old DOS version of Word Perfect and use that as
your qualifying product.

Hi Bob,

If all he needs to do is to have a version of WordPerfect as his qualifying
product, then why isn't the already-installed WordPerfect that came with his
Dell "qualifying" for his Office 2000 upgrade?
