Error during Repair/Re-Instal of Win XP

I have a corrupted WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\SYSTEM\CONFIG file.
Using either Repair (Recovery Console) or Re-Instal, I
select the system to log on to (1 C:\WINDOWS) and get
BSOD with error PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA. What's that
about?
