Error deleting file/folder

I have somehow got an item on my desktop which i cannot delete. The error
message is "Cannot delete file: access denied. Make sure the disk is not full
or write-protected & the file is not currently in use."

Can anybody please help?

What is the name of the file? If you press ctrl-shift-esc to display the Task
Manager > Click on the processes Tab > Can you see a reference to the file?
If so click on it, then click the end process button. you should now be able
to delete the file.
