I have tried to install Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1.0 several times.
When installation is almost complete (92%) the Windows Installer kicks in to
complete the process, and then comes up with the followng message:
"Error 1714. The older version of Adobe Acrobat Reader 8.1.0 cannot be
removed. Contact technical support."
The download then fails. Previous versions of Adobe Acrobat were loaded and
working on my computer, but now I do not have a working PDF reader at all.
Any advice is welcome. Thanks for reading.

Did you contact Adobe technical support as the message states?

Thanks for your reply. I did, but a simpleton like me had difficulty
understanding what to do.
The good thing is, I found someone with a similar problem installing
QuickTime v716. Thanks to Richard A. Landkamer for sharing his problem, and
to Rock who provided the solution
Download and run the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility.
Delete any references to QuickTime, (in my case 'Adobe Acrobat').

Glad it worked out.

Hi,

I'd use 'Add-Remove Programs' to remove all previous versions of Adobe
Reader, and then either find versions 5, 6 or 7 on a CD (mainboard driver
and hardware installation disks are usually happy hunting grounds for that
sort of thing), or see whether you can download it from the Adobe website.
Alternatively, get Acrobat 5 (the full program) from 'somewhere', and have
the use of a *really* handy piece of software.
