error code 0x800c0005

I am new to XP and was told to update it as soon as possible. When I try I keep getting this error code 0x800c0005 and have no idea what it is or how to correct it. Driving me nuts please help!!!!!

This error can be caused if you are behind a firewall and also occasionally
if Internet Explorer is set for 'Automatically Detect Settings' under LAN
settings on the Connections tab.

I looked in Internet Explorer and found it not in automatically detect settings, I also went into the control panel and looked for a reference to a firewall and found none. I tried again to use the Windows Update and got the same error message as before. Any Ideas as to what I can do now???
