Hi. I am getting thie above error in windows defender when it tries to
update the definitions. I have seen other messages and have tried the
solutions but to no avail. I have vista home premium and it tells me that
windows defender is within vista and cannot find a way to uninstall to
re-install. Can anyone help me out.

Like you, I think I read every post newsgroup. Solution is actually pretty
simple. Go to Windows update. Click on change settings (on the left). Check
"never check for updates." Remove any other checks (Recommended update and
any other). Then go back to Defender and run the Updates again. Version
downloaded should read 1.15.2336.7. It will also download a couple? of
Windows updates. After, don't forget to go back to Win updates and change
back to auto setting. Good Luck.

Hi Robert531. Many thanks for your advice, you were right it was simple,
changed the settings in windows update then run windows defender check for
updates, at first it did not work, however i found that I hadn't clicked on
the ok box after I had done the changes in windows update. Once again many
thanks.

Robert531 - You're the best. I think it worked!!!! Great!
Tks.
Any clue on how I can install Outlook Express with Vista... that's the worst
thing for me in Vista so far! I need Outlook EXPRESS back so badly!
Tks.

I'd strongly recommend against this--just use Windows Mail, or try one of
the alternatives.

Thanks Robert! Bang on and you're right, -- a rather
simple solution but one I'm so happy I stumbled on
in here. You saved me lots of grief. Unfortunately I
think many of us are finding that error code 0x80240029
is a much more common nuisance in Windows Defender
Vista Premium edition than the 'set and forget' seamlessness
it's supposed to be...
No on to trying to figure out why my Windows Media
Receiver Service is always shutting down...
Oh well.

Thunderbird, Outlook, Eudora, Windows Live Mail.

I'd need to know what it is about Outlook Express that MVitoi finds lacking
in Vista to suggest anything specific.

HTML is slower, but it also knows who I am.

Robert531,
You helped me solve the problem in less than 5 minutes !!
You are the "wow" that Vista can't do without.
Thanks !!

Hi Robert531

Your right it worked. I already had 1.15.2336.7 installed, but after I did
the update 1.15.2336.7 was installed. Know it works fine.

Thanks

I followed all the steps. Loaded the "new definitions." Now when I try to
turn Defender on, it says there are no new definitions and WILL NOT turn on.

Any more help to give?

It didn't do the trick for me. Followed instructions to the letter and
exactly the same error message comes up. I already have definitions version
1.15.2336.7 installed.

Any other suggestions for how to solve this problem?

It seems daft that a Windows Update should scupper Defender from being able
to update definitions. I think it's called shooting yourself in the foot!!
